Innovators Get an Edge Free Article
Jul 15th, 2009 | Categories: EntrepreneurshipInnovation is often defined as something newly invented, such as a process or technology or system. Frequently, we use innovation in reference to things scientific, high-tech. Innovative often describes the people behind the process or technology – we refer to them as resourceful, creative, forward-thinking, or proactive.
These are Arizona’s entrepreneurs – imaginative, inventive, ingenious – the small business owners who have a dream and the tenacity, diligence, perseverance and determination to turn those dreams into reality. They work hard and long, and are fabulous multitaskers. They account for nearly 98% of all the businesses in the state, and are truly the engine that drives our economy.
Innovators today are tasked with more than running a business. They must identify their niche – what makes their product unique. They must be able to adapt quickly in an ever more competitive global marketplace, and they embrace challenges with creativity – it’s the out of the box thinking that can provide some strong solutions and brilliant successes.
The road to commercialization is challenging, but it is chock-full of resources. Arizona universities, community colleges and government agencies, including the state Department of Commerce, are excellent places to leverage resources and network, often at little or no cost. Consider accelerator and incubator programs to develop your concept while supporting your new business. Some programs provide office or lab space, coaching, consulting and shared support services. You’ll get expert advice and qualified assistance.
Funding for research-based technologies can also be found through Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer Research (STTR) Programs. Each is available for start-up and early-stage companies or ongoing research at established operations. The goal behind both programs is to increase innovation and private sector commercialization derived from Federal research and development, thereby increasing competition, productivity and economic growth.
The resources available will give you an edge by providing assistance to move your technology closer to market.
